Have you ever sent a warm, well-meaning message to someone, only to have them completely misinterpret your intentions? Maybe you reached out to offer comfort after a loss, congratulated a coworker on a promotion, or simply asked a friend how their week was going. But instead of receiving your gesture with the warmth you intended, they responded with suspicion, coldness, or sharp hostility. They assumed you had an angle, an ulterior motive, or a hidden agenda.

It is a painful, disorienting feeling. When we reach out in good faith and our open hand gets slapped away, our instinct is often either to retreat into self-doubt or to strike back in anger. Human relationships are fragile, and trust is remarkably easy to break when fear enters the room.
