Yahrzeit calculator

Find the Hebrew date of a loved one's passing and the yahrzeit dates for the next ten years.

What is a yahrzeit?

The anniversary of a death on the Hebrew calendar, observed each year with the Mourner's Kaddish, a 24-hour memorial candle, and often study or tzedakah in the person's memory.

Why does the yahrzeit fall on a different civil date each year?

The yahrzeit follows the Hebrew date, and the Hebrew calendar is lunisolar — so the matching civil date shifts within a few weeks year to year.

What if the death occurred after nightfall?

The Hebrew day begins at nightfall, so a passing after dark belongs to the next Hebrew date. Use the checkbox in the calculator and it adjusts automatically.

When do I light the yahrzeit candle?

At sunset on the evening the yahrzeit begins — the evening before the civil date shown — burning for 24 hours.
