Have you ever inherited a mess you had absolutely nothing to do with? Maybe you started a new job, opened a project folder, and found a spreadsheet full of errors left behind by the person before you. Or maybe your landlord changed the plumbing rules because of something a tenant did back in 2018. It feels completely unfair. Today's story from the Hebrew Bible drops us right into that exact feeling. King David is finally settled on the royal throne. He has survived running for his life in the wilderness, dodging spears, and navigating civil war. He is ready for a quiet, golden era. Instead, the sky dries up. Crops wither in the fields. A brutal famine drags on for one year, then two years, and then three years.
