Have you ever tried to do something meaningful, only to have it go completely off the rails? King David thought he was doing a great thing, but he learned the hard way that even the best intentions need a little bit of structure.

Insight 1: Good intentions aren't always enough

David tried to transport the holy Ark on a "new cart"—a modern, efficient upgrade. But the tradition required the Ark to be carried on the shoulders of the Levites (priests). David’s attempt to "improve" the process led to disaster. Sometimes, we get so caught up in the "what" that we ignore the "how."

Insight 2: The tension between Love and Awe

Commentators like the Mei HaShiloach suggest David’s dance was fueled by pure, ecstatic love for the Divine. However, he forgot that religious life also requires "awe"—a sense of boundaries and respect. When things go wrong, it’s a wake-up call to balance our passion with discipline.

This week, take 60 seconds before starting a project or a chore to ask: "Is there a 'traditional' or 'mindful' way to do this that I’ve been rushing past?" Slowing down to follow a process can actually make the task more sacred.
