Joshua 21
Insight: The Beauty of Belonging
In Joshua 21, the Levites—who had no land of their own—approach the leaders to claim the towns promised to them. It’s a beautiful picture of community integration: they weren't isolated; they were woven into the fabric of every other tribe. Parenting is similar. We often feel we must "own" everything—the perfect routine, the perfect home. But like the Levites, our strength comes from where we are planted and how we connect with those around us. Even on Rosh Chodesh Tamuz, a time of reflection, remember: you don’t need to be an island to be a good parent. You just need to show up where you’re placed.

"The Israelites assigned those towns with their pastures by lot to the Levites—as G-D had commanded through Moses." Joshua 21:8
Activity: The "Pasture" Map (5-10 min)
Sit with your child and draw a simple "map" of your home or neighborhood. Mark the places where you feel supported (the park, a neighbor’s house, the library, a grandparent’s home). Explain that just like the Levites lived in cities throughout the other tribes, we have "pastures"—community spaces—that help us grow. It’s a great way to talk about the village that helps raise them.
Script: Answering "Why do we have to share?"
"You know, even the Levites in the Bible didn't have their own private land. They lived among everyone else so they could share their gifts and be part of the whole community. When we share, we aren't losing anything; we’re just making sure everyone has a place to grow."
Habit: The Micro-Win
This week, reach out to one person in your "pasture" (a friend, teacher, or neighbor) just to say, "Thanks for being part of our village."
Takeaway
You aren't parenting in a vacuum. Your "good-enough" effort is held up by the community around you. Take a breath; you’re exactly where you need to be.
