Joshua 3
Insight: Leading by Following
Parenting often feels like we are the ones who must pave the road. Yet, Joshua teaches us a profound counter-intuitive lesson: leadership isn't about being the "expert" who knows the way; it’s about modeling how to follow the "Ark"—the values, traditions, and divine guidance that precede us. When we show our children that we, too, are guided by something greater than our own impulses, we take the pressure off ourselves to be perfect and invite them into a shared journey.

"Follow it—but keep a distance of some two thousand cubits from it... so that you may know by what route to march, since it is a road you have not traveled before." — Joshua 3:3-4
Activity: The "Ark" Walk (≤10 min)
Choose a path in your home or yard your child hasn't explored before (or just a walk around the block). Tell them: "Today, we aren't just walking; we are following our values (like kindness or courage)." Put a special object (a toy or book) in a backpack. You follow the backpack, and let your child "lead" by keeping it in sight. Talk about how even when the road is new, we know where to go because we keep our eyes on what matters most.
Script: When Kids Ask "Why?"
Child: "Why do we have to do this/go there/follow this rule?" You: "That’s a great question. We’re doing this because it’s part of our map—it’s how our family stays on the right path. Even when I’m not sure exactly what’s ahead, I follow these values because they help us find our way together. Let’s figure out the next step together."
Habit: The "Pause Before"
This week, pick one daily transition (like leaving for school or starting dinner). Stop for 10 seconds before starting. Say out loud, "We are about to start [task]. What is the 'Ark' (our goal/value) we are following right now?"
Takeaway
You don't have to know the destination to lead well. Just keep the values in sight, and let your children watch you follow them.
