Hook

Have you ever made a big decision without checking the facts first, only to realize later you were missing a crucial piece of the puzzle? In Joshua 9, the Israelites find themselves in exactly that spot.

Context

  • The Setting: After arriving in the land of Israel, Joshua’s army is on a winning streak.
  • The Players: The Gibeonites, a local group, realize they can’t beat Israel in battle.
  • The Trick: They dress in rags and carry moldy bread to pretend they traveled from a "very distant land" to seek a peace treaty.
  • Key Term: Chevruta (a traditional Jewish study method where two people discuss a text together).

Text Snapshot

"Those involved took [their word for it] because of their provisions, and did not inquire of God. Joshua established friendship with them; he made a pact with them... But when three days had passed... they learned that they were neighbors." (Joshua 9:14–16)

Insight 1: The Trap of "Common Sense"

The Israelites looked at the moldy bread and worn-out shoes and thought, "Well, the evidence is right in front of us!" They relied on what they saw rather than asking God for guidance. Sometimes, we get so caught up in the "obvious" facts that we forget to pause and reflect on the bigger picture.

Insight 2: Integrity Matters

Even though the Israelites were tricked, they kept their promise. They realized that because they swore an oath in God’s name, their word was binding. They chose to honor their integrity, even when it was inconvenient and frustrating.

Apply It

The 60-Second Pause: Before you say "yes" to a request or make a snap judgment this week, take one minute to stop, breathe, and ask yourself: "Am I seeing the whole picture, or am I just looking at the moldy bread?"

Chevruta Mini

  1. Why do you think the Israelites forgot to "inquire of God" when they were so successful in their previous battles?
  2. If you were Joshua, would you still honor a contract made under false pretenses? Why or why not?

Takeaway

Even when we make a mistake by acting too quickly, we can choose to act with integrity and honor the commitments we have made.
