Judges 6
Hook
Remember that moment at camp when you were nervous to lead a song or take the stage? You felt small, like you didn't have the "right" voice. In Judges 6:15, Gideon says, "My clan is the humblest... and I am the youngest." He was hiding in a winepress, hoping no one would notice him. But God calls him a "valiant warrior" anyway.

Context
- Israel is hiding in caves, their crops raided by Midianites—the ancient equivalent of having your summer campsite trashed by a storm.
- Gideon is literally threshing wheat in a winepress to stay out of sight; he’s doing the right work in the wrong place because he's afraid.
- Like a hiker who loses their map and blames the mountain, the people cry out for help, but the prophet reminds them that their path was lost the moment they stopped listening to God.
Text Snapshot
"The angel of GOD appeared to him and said to him, 'GOD is with you, valiant warrior!' Gideon said to him, 'Please, my lord, if GOD is with us, why has all this befallen us?'" Judges 6:12-13

Insight 1: The "Valiant Warrior" Mirror
God sees Gideon not as he is (a scared guy hiding in a hole), but as who he is becoming. Sometimes our family members or friends need us to reflect their potential back to them when they can't see it themselves.
Insight 2: Questioning is Part of the Process
Gideon’s "Why?" isn't a lack of faith; it’s an honest, mid-struggle conversation with the Divine. He demands a sign, and God—patiently—gives it. It’s okay to bring our "Why is this happening?" moments to the dinner table.
Micro-Ritual
This Friday night, try a "Strength Check-in." Before Kiddush, go around the table and name one "valiant" thing you saw someone else do this week—even if it was just staying calm during a stressful moment.
Chevruta Mini
- If God called you a "valiant warrior" today, what specific challenge in your life would that be addressing?
- Why do you think Gideon needed the sign of the dew and the fleece? Do you have "fleeces" you use when you need reassurance?
Takeaway
You don’t have to wait until you feel brave to start leading. Like Gideon, you can start in the shadows, keep asking your "why," and trust that the courage grows after you take the first step.
Sing-able line: (To the tune of a simple campfire chant) "Adonai Shalom, God is with me, Valiant warrior, setting me free."
