Judges 6

Insight

We often view parenting as a performance that requires "perfect" conditions. Gideon, however, was hiding in a winepress, trembling, and full of doubt Judges 6:11. Yet, the text calls him a "valiant warrior" before he had done a single heroic thing. God saw his potential through his fear. As parents, we don't need to be fearless or "put together" to be leaders in our homes; we just need to show up in the messy middle of our own lives. Your "good-enough" is the soil where your children’s resilience grows.

Text Snapshot

"The angel of GOD appeared to him and said to him, 'GOD is with you, valiant warrior!' Gideon said to him, 'Please, my lord, if GOD is with us, why has all this befallen us?'" Judges 6:12-13

Activity

The "Winepress" Check-in (5 mins): When you feel overwhelmed, sit with your child and share one thing you’re struggling with today (keep it age-appropriate). Ask them: "Even when things are hard, what is one way we can be brave together?" Write it on a sticky note and put it on the fridge. It humanizes you and models that courage isn't the absence of fear, but acting despite it.

Script

If your child asks, "Why do bad things happen if God is with us?" "That is the big question Gideon asked too! Sometimes we don't know the 'why,' but we know that we aren't alone. We are like Gideon—we might feel scared, but we can look for ways to help each other and make our world a little brighter, even when things feel messy."

Habit

The "Fleece" Pause: When faced with a parenting decision, take 30 seconds to breathe. Instead of reacting, ask yourself: "What is the most 'shalom' (peaceful) move I can make right now?"

Takeaway

You don't need to be a hero to lead your family; you just need to be present, honest about your doubts, and willing to try again tomorrow. That is enough.
