Insight: The Priority Reset

In Numbers 32, the tribes of Reuben and Gad ask to settle outside the main land of Israel because they have "much livestock." They prioritize their assets (the cattle) over their community’s mission. Moses, in his wisdom, corrects their perspective. He tells them to build "towns for your children" before "sheepfolds for your flocks."

As parents, we often fall into the "cattle trap"—prioritizing the logistics of life (schedules, chores, career, keeping the house together) over the souls of our children. Moses reminds us: organize your life to serve your children, not the other way around. It’s okay to have "cattle," but don’t let your sheepfolds dictate your family’s geography.

Activity: The 5-Minute Priority Audit

Sit with your child for five minutes. Ask them: "If we had one hour of 'us time' this weekend with no chores, what is one thing we could do that would make you feel happiest?" Listen without trying to "fix" their answer. Whether it’s playing a game or just sitting on the porch, treat that request as your "city for your little ones" for the week.

Script: When Kids Ask, "Why can't we do [X]?"

"I know it feels like we’re missing out on that, but right now, our family’s 'main city'—the place we need to focus our energy—is building our connection at home. We have a lot of 'cattle' to manage, but you are the priority. Let’s look at our calendar and see how we can make space for that later."

Habit: The "People First" Pause

Before you start a task this week (laundry, emails, dishes), take three seconds to look at your child. If they are nearby, make eye contact and smile. If not, mentally "bless" them. This micro-habit shifts your focus from the "sheepfold" (the task) to the "little ones" (the priority).

Takeaway

Your kids aren't an interruption to your work; they are the work. Build the cities for their hearts first; the sheepfolds will follow.
