By Heart: Learn the Prayers

Memorize Tefillot & Psalms

Know it without the book.

By Heart teaches you forty-two Jewish texts — prayers, blessings, psalms and passages of Torah — by taking the words away a few at a time. You start with the whole text in front of you and end on a blank page with only the first line as a cue. The blanks move every day, so you are learning the text rather than the shape of the page.

How it works

  • Six levels, from fully visible to nothing but the opening words
  • The words that hide are chosen fresh each day, so you can't memorize the gaps
  • Grade each line "Got it" or "Not yet" — the ones you miss come back sooner
  • Recite Mode: no scoring, large type, and "Reveal all" always one tap away
  • Listen: any line read aloud in the iPhone's Hebrew voice, so you can learn it by ear
  • Reach the last level and a quiet milestone card marks it

Forty-two texts, in five sections

Daily · Shabbat · Blessings · Psalms · Torah. Almost all are taken verbatim from Sefaria — Tanakh with nikud and cantillation, liturgy from the Siddur Ashkenaz tree — so the wording is sourced rather than retyped. The handful set by hand are labelled Nusach Ashkenaz, because wording varies by community and we would rather say so than pretend.

Works on a plane

Everything is bundled. The app makes no network calls at all — not on first launch, not ever. There is no account and nothing to sign up for; your progress lives on the phone, with a backup to your own iCloud. You choose what you're working on: nothing appears unless you turn it on.

A companion to Derekh Learning, the full Jewish-learning app.
