We have all been there: you have a strict routine, a perfect schedule, or a set of personal rules that keep your life running smoothly. Maybe you vow never to look at your phone after 9:00 PM, or you commit to never interrupting a quiet moment of meditation. But suddenly, the phone rings. It is a friend in tears, or someone in desperate need of help. What do you do? Do you stick to your rule because "rules are rules," or do you break it instantly to show up for another human being?

This is a classic human dilemma. We often think of ancient spiritual paths as rigid, unyielding, and obsessed with details. We worry that religious laws might lock us into a cold, clinical lifestyle where the rule matters more than the person standing right in front of us.
