Hook

Have you ever felt completely trapped by a strict rule? Imagine you are playing a board game with your family. The rulebook says you must take a specific path, but you can see that your little sister is about to drop her ice cream cone on the new couch. Do you freeze and say, "Sorry, the rules say I must roll a six first!" or do you dive across the living room carpet to save the day?

Most of us would drop the game pieces in a heartbeat. Yet, when we think about ancient religious traditions, we often picture them as incredibly stiff, unbending, and obsessed with details. We imagine a system of laws where the rules are set in stone, and if you bend them, you fail. It is easy to think that ancient wisdom cares more about perfect rituals than about actual, living people.
