Imagine you are standing on your second-story apartment balcony on a sunny Saturday morning. Across a narrow street, your friend is standing on their own balcony. You are both sipping coffee, enjoying the fresh air, and having a nice conversation across the open space. Suddenly, your friend realizes they forgot their favorite book. You happen to have an extra copy right on your table. You could easily wind up your arm and toss the book across the street directly into their waiting hands.

It sounds simple enough, right? Your feet never leave your private balcony. Your friend never steps off their private balcony. The book starts in a private home and lands in a private home. Yet, in that brief two-second flight, the book sails through the open air directly above a busy public street where neighbors are walking dogs, pushing strollers, and heading to work.
