In Nazir 3, the Gemara debates whether a person who commits to a self-imposed restriction is a "sinner" or a person of integrity. Rabbi Elazar HaKappar suggests that a Nazirite is a sinner because, eventually, he might regret the burden he placed upon himself. But the Gemara distinguishes: the "sinner" is only the one who fails—the one who becomes impure and has to restart the clock, dragging out a process that was supposed to be a finite sprint.
