The Intention Gap
We often speak in shorthand, assuming our kids (or spouses) know exactly what we mean. Today’s text from Nazir 9 explores a person who vows to be a nazir (a specifically defined role) but adds a confusing condition: "I will refrain from dried figs." The Sages debate: Does the person become a nazir, or is the contradiction so messy that the whole vow is void? The takeaway? Our words matter, but our intent is what holds the structure together. On this second day of Rosh Hashanah, we recognize that our messy, imperfect attempts at connection—even when we stumble over our own words—still count as sincere efforts toward holiness.
