Insight
In this tractate, the Sages discuss the concept of bitul—nullification. When a minority of something "impure" is mixed into a vast majority of something "pure," the impurity loses its power. As parents, we often obsess over the "impure" moments: the toddler’s tantrum, the burnt dinner, or the short-fused morning. We view these as defining features of our household. But Jewish wisdom teaches us that our parenting is not defined by the "minority" of our mistakes. When your day is filled with the "majority" of loving presence, routine, and care, those difficult moments are functionally nullified. You are doing a better job than your anxiety wants you to believe.
Text Snapshot
"It is due to the halakhic nullification of a forbidden substance in a majority of permitted substances that the Sages touched upon it." — Bekhorot 22a
Activity
The "Majority" Jar (≤ 5 min) Place a clear jar on your counter. This week, every time you notice a "micro-win"—a child putting their shoes away, a shared laugh, or simply getting everyone out the door—drop a marble (or a dried bean) into the jar. At the end of the week, look at the "majority" you have collected. It is a visual reminder that your love and effort far outweigh the messy "minority" of difficult moments.
Script
When your child asks, "Why are you always so tired/stressed/rushed?" "I’m human, and sometimes being a parent is a really big job! But even when I’m tired, my favorite part of the day is always [X]. My love for you is the biggest thing in our house, and that’s what matters most."
Habit
The 10-Second Reset: Before entering the house after work or school, take ten seconds to visualize your home as a space where "minority" mistakes are nullified by your family's underlying bond. Breathe, let go of the commute, and walk in as the parent you want to be.
Takeaway
You aren't a perfect parent, but you are a present one. Let your love be the majority that defines your week. Shabbat Shalom and Chodesh Tov!
