Most of us know that sudden tug between pure appetite and mindful restraint. It is easy to take whatever sits right in front of us simply because we can.

Our ancient ancestors wrestled with the exact same human impulse. Long before snack aisles or smartphones, people lived close to the open fields and forests. Finding a bird’s nest filled with eggs or tiny chicks felt like winning the wild lottery. It was a fast meal and easy nourishment. Yet, an ancient teaching tucked into Deuteronomy 22:6-7 stopped people right in their tracks: if you find a nest, do not take the mother bird along with her young. Send the mother away first, and only then may you take the offspring.
