Insight: The Power of Public Vulnerability
We often feel that to be "good" parents, we must project an image of total competence and seamless control. But Chullin 78a teaches us the opposite. When a tree is struggling to hold its fruit, the Talmud suggests "painting it red" so passersby see its distress and pray for it. It links this to the leper who must cry out "Impure!"—not to shame himself, but to invite the community into his struggle. Your children don’t need a perfect parent; they need a human one who knows how to ask for help. When you admit, "I’m having a hard time today, I need a moment," you aren’t failing; you are teaching them that communal support and vulnerability are sources of strength.
