Insight 1: Beware the "Optimization Trap"
The Rabbis debate whether to have seven distinct vessels for seven quantities or to use a smaller vessel repeatedly. The trap is assuming that "dedicated" equals "efficient." In startups, building a dedicated feature or process for every minor variance creates massive technical debt. If you can solve three use cases with one tool, you aren't "cutting corners"—you’re reducing your maintenance surface area.
Insight 2: Truth is in the "Full" Definition
The Gemara notes a dispute on the meaning of "full." One view holds that a measure must be exact; the other accepts a slight overflow as "full." In business, define your "Minimum Viable" thresholds. If your standard for "done" is perfection, you’ll never ship. If your standard is "functional and within tolerance," you scale.
Insight 3: Tradition isn't an excuse for Bloat
Even when a specific tool (the hin vessel) was no longer needed for daily operations, some argued it stayed in the Temple just because it was always there. Founders often keep legacy processes or software modules simply because "we’ve always had them." If it doesn't serve a current, recurring need, it’s not an asset—it’s inventory that needs to be "sequestered" (archived/deleted).
Policy Move
The "Rule of Three" Audit: Before commissioning a new custom tool, API, or internal process, mandate that the team demonstrates why existing "vessels" (existing tech/processes) cannot be used in combination to achieve the same result. If you can’t justify a new build by showing how it eliminates three legacy processes, don't build it.
Board-Level Question
"Which of our internal processes or software tools are we maintaining only because they were 'fashioned' in our early days, rather than because they provide actual utility to our current scale?"
Takeaway
Complexity is a choice, not a requirement. Just because you can build a dedicated vessel for every quantity doesn't mean you should. Focus on the "full" outcome, not the "perfect" tool.
