1. Functional Integrity vs. Cosmetic Fixes
The Mishnah distinguishes between a jar that is structurally sound (even if patched) and a mere potsherd. If the "vessel" status remains, the patch is just a temporary measure. In business, if your core value proposition is fundamentally cracked, no amount of "pitch" (marketing hacks or short-term pivots) will restore its status as a viable product.
2. The Persistence of Identity
When a jar is mended, the law asks: Is this still a vessel? If the infrastructure is sound enough to hold value (a quarter log), it retains its identity. Founders must audit their "patches." Are you fixing a process to keep the company’s mission alive, or are you just gluing together a broken business model that no longer functions as a market-ready tool?
3. Knowing When to Scrap
The potsherd—a piece of a broken jar—can never be a vessel again, even if patched. Trying to force a broken, irrelevant product unit to perform like a new one is a waste of capital. Admit when the "vessel" is dead.
Policy Move
The "Patch Audit": Every quarter, categorize all feature fixes as either "Maintenance" (restoring a sound vessel) or "Patching" (trying to resurrect a broken one). If a product feature requires a "patch" to function, mandate a sunset review. If the cost of the patch > 20% of the feature's ARR, kill the feature.
