1. The Utility Test
The Sages distinguish between a vessel that remains a vessel and a heap of shards held together by glue. Decision Rule: If your process only works because of the "patch" (the manual override, the temporary script, the technical debt), you have lost the integrity of the original system. Stop managing the patch; start replacing the vessel.
2. The "Necessary" Metric
The Mishnah notes: “That which touches the needed portion is unclean, but that which touches the unneeded portion is clean.” Decision Rule: Focus on the core architecture. If you add "unneeded" complexity (gold-plating a feature), you create noise that doesn't actually contribute to the product's identity.
3. Structural Integrity vs. Cosmetic Adhesion
“The sages say: a lining over a sound vessel is not susceptible to impurity, and only one over a cracked vessel is susceptible.” Decision Rule: If you are reinforcing a "sound" process, you are adding weight. If you are reinforcing a "cracked" process, you are creating a dependency. Know when your fix is a tool and when it’s a crutch.

The "Debt Audit": Every quarter, identify one "patched" process (the "cattle dung" holding the jar together). If the process cannot function without that specific patch, trigger an automatic "rebuild-or-replace" protocol rather than continuing to patch.
