Have you ever walked into a room right after an argument took place? Nobody says a word, yet the tension hangs thick in the air. You sit in a chair, pick up a mug, and somehow you can feel the heavy vibration of what just happened. Human experiences leave an invisible residue on people, on spaces, and even on the tools we handle every single day.

Our ancient ancestors had a brilliant, deeply physical system for understanding this exact phenomenon. They called it the system of ritual status. Today, we are opening up a fascinating piece of rabbinic literature from the tractate of Oholot (which literally means "Tents"). On the surface, it looks like a bizarre legal math problem about how contact with death spreads through people, metal tools, and fabric. You might wonder: why would anyone spend hours counting how many days of spiritual downtime a person needs after touching a spear or a tent peg?
