Even though it was forbidden, the act of declaring an exchange actually worked! The regular animal became holy. Our words and intentions, even when misused, can have real impact.

Once an animal was consecrated (declared holy for the Temple), it stayed holy. Even if someone tried to swap it, the original animal kept its sacred status. You can't "un-holy" something so easily!
