Bite-SizedBeginner – Jewish BasicsMarch 8, 2026

Hello, friend! Ever have one of those days where everything feels… something? Maybe amazing, maybe a bit bumpy. What if there was a Jewish way to acknowledge all of it, big or small?

Context

Let's dip into the wisdom of the Rambam, a super smart Jewish scholar from about 800 years ago. He wrote Mishneh Torah, a huge book explaining Jewish law, like a spiritual operating manual!

  • Who: Rambam (Moses Maimonides)
  • When: 12th Century Egypt
  • Where: His famous law code, Mishneh Torah
  • Key Term: A Bracha (Blessing) is a special phrase to connect with God.

Text Snapshot

The Rambam teaches us about acknowledging life's moments: "When a person hears favorable tidings, he should recite the blessing: 'Blessed are You, God... who is good and does good.' If he hears bad tidings, he should recite the blessing: 'Blessed [are You...] the true Judge.' A person is obligated to recite a blessing over undesirable occurrences with a positive spirit... [as implied by Deuteronomy 6:5]: 'And you shall love God, your Lord... with all your might.'" (Mishneh Torah, Blessings 10:11 - https://www.sefaria.org/Mishneh_Torah%2C_Blessings_10-11)

Insight 1

Jewish tradition encourages us to hit pause and acknowledge God in every part of life. Not just the big wins, but the little everyday things, and even the tough stuff. It’s like saying, "Hey God, I see You here!"

Insight 2

Even when something challenging happens, we say a special Bracha called Dayan HaEmet (Dye-AHN Hah-EH-met), which is a blessing acknowledging God's ultimate justice. It doesn’t mean we’re happy about the challenge, but we trust there's a bigger plan, even if we can't see it yet. This helps us find a "positive spirit" even in difficulty.

Apply It

This week, try this: when something good or challenging (even small!) happens, pause for 10 seconds. Take a deep breath and just think, "Thank You, God," or "God, help me find peace/understanding."

  1. What's one small "good tidings" from your week you could have paused to appreciate?
  2. How might acknowledging God in challenging moments change your perspective, even just a little?

Takeaway

Blessings help us find God's presence in every moment, making life a richer, more connected journey.
