Insight: The Beauty of Boundaries
In this week’s reading from the Mishneh Torah, Defilement by Leprosy 5:7, Maimonides details a complex system of skin conditions, burns, and boils. It sounds clinical—even detached—but there is a profound parenting lesson hidden in the legal distinctions: things that are separate should stay separate. Maimonides explains that a burn and a boil are distinct; they do not combine to create a larger problem. In our homes, we often let the "burns" (a bad mood at breakfast) bleed into the "boils" (a struggle with homework), until the whole day feels like one big, impure mess. When we treat each challenge as a discrete, contained event, we stop the "spread" of negativity and gain the mental space to handle what is actually in front of us.
