Have you ever stood in your kitchen, pouring cold milk into a steaming mug of hot coffee, and watched that thin, continuous stream connect the carton to the cup? For a split second, an odd thought might cross your mind: could the hot coffee somehow climb up that falling stream and get into the milk carton? Or picture washing dishes in a sink full of sudsy, murky water. When you rinse an apple under the running tap, does the dirty water at the bottom reach up through the splashing stream to touch the clean faucet head above?

In our daily lives, we navigate invisible connections all the time. We worry about contamination—both physical and emotional. When you have a stressful conversation with an angry friend, does their agitation travel back into you, even if you were only trying to offer help? If your workday bleeds into your evening through a quick glance at an email, where did your boundary fail? We often assume that any contact between two things links them completely into one shared mess.
