Have you ever felt an overwhelming urge to press the reset button on your life? Maybe you had a chaotic week at work, an argument that left you feeling drained, or you simply feel weighed down by the sheer noise of everyday life. Most of us reach for familiar fixes: we take a long shower, clean out our inbox, or take a quiet walk outside. We yearn for a clear boundary between whatever happened yesterday and whatever fresh start is waiting for us tomorrow.

In Jewish tradition, that profound yearning for a clean slate is embodied in an ancient, water-based ritual called immersion in a mikveh. But here is the fascinating puzzle that Jewish legal scholars spent centuries debating: you cannot simply turn on a brass tap, fill up a luxury porcelain tub with warm water, and call it a spiritual reset. In fact, according to Jewish law, if you haul water in buckets and dump it into an unfinished pool, that human-carried water actually disqualifies the entire pool.
