Hook

Have you ever tripped over a perfectly flat sidewalk, realized a few people saw you, and immediately started jogging as if you did it on purpose? Or maybe you accidentally replied-all to a massive work email with a silly typo, and spent the next hour trying to convince yourself that "it adds character"?

We humans have a funny, deeply hardwired relationship with our mistakes. When we slip up, our natural instinct is to protect our egos at all costs. We deny it, we pretend we meant to do it, or we try to sweep it under the rug. It is incredibly hard to look at ourselves in the mirror and simply say: "Oops. I messed up. I didn't mean to, but I did it."
