Insight: The Power of "Rending the Heart"
When we face life’s "droughts"—stress, family conflict, or burnout—our instinct is often to perform the outer rituals of "being a good parent." We change the schedule, we buy the new organizational system, or we push harder. But Maimonides reminds us that God isn't looking for the sackcloth; He is looking for the heart. Real change in our homes happens not when we perfect our external performance, but when we are vulnerable enough to "rend our hearts"—to stop, breathe, and humbly acknowledge our need for connection and repair.
