Hook

Ever wonder what's truly non-negotiable in life? Or how far someone should go to stick to their values? Jewish wisdom has some pretty clear, and sometimes surprising, answers.

Context

Here’s a quick intro to where we’re looking:

  • Who: Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, known as Maimonides or Rambam. He was a brilliant thinker!
  • When: He lived in the 12th century. Think medieval times.
  • Where: Born in Spain, lived much of his life in Egypt.
  • What: His book, Mishneh Torah, is a famous guide to Jewish law.

Text Snapshot

Maimonides writes: "The entire house of Israel are commanded regarding the sanctification of [God's] great name... they are warned against desecrating [His holy name]... Should a gentile force a Jew to violate one of the Torah's commandments at the pain of death, he should violate the commandment rather than be killed, because [Leviticus 18:5] states... 'which a man will perform and live by them.' One may live by them and not die because of them." Insight 1: Life Comes First, Usually!

Our tradition generally says: if someone threatens your life to make you break a Jewish law, you should break the law and live. The Torah's goal is life, not death! (No need to be a hero when life is on the line for most laws.)

Insight 2: Sanctifying God's Name

This idea is called Kiddush Hashem (sanctifying God's name). It means making God's name beloved through good deeds. While saving a life often overrides other laws, there are rare, specific exceptions for the most severe acts (like murder).

Apply It

This week, try a small act of kindness or honesty just because it's the right thing to do. Maybe return a forgotten item or offer a genuine compliment. You're making the world a bit better, and that's a quiet Kiddush Hashem!

Chevruta Mini

  1. How does the idea of "live by them, not die by them" make you feel about Jewish law?
  2. What's a simple, everyday way you could quietly "sanctify God's name" (make the world better) this week?

Takeaway

Jewish tradition usually prioritizes life over ritual observance, encouraging us to live fully and make God's name beloved through our actions.
