[MT Yesodei HaTorah 7:1]
The Rambam opens by listing a חכם, גבור במדותיו, and שלם בגופו. Note the emphasis on mental and moral fortitude preceding physical completeness.

Seder Mishnah: Wealth as Consequence, Not Precondition
The Seder Mishnah (s.v. "עיין מ"ש מרן") grapples with Rambam's omission of "עשיר" (wealthy) and "בעל קומה" (of stature) from the prerequisites for prophecy, which appear in R' Yochanan's statement in Nedarim 38a. The Seder Mishnah's central chiddush is that for Rambam, wealth is not an essential precondition (הכרח לעצמות הנבואה) for prophecy to initially rest upon a person. Rather, it is a תוספות הדור להנבואה – an enhancement that often follows prophecy, a segulah that ensures the prophet's words are heeded, as חכמת המסכן בזויה (the wisdom of the poor is disdained). Moses, for instance, was not wealthy when he first prophesied, only later from the chips of the second tablets.
Friction
The strongest kushya is the apparent contradiction between Rambam's concise list of prophetic qualities and the broader list, including עשיר and בעל קומה, attributed to R' Yochanan in Nedarim 38a. The Seder Mishnah's terutz distinguishes between qualities essential for the halat ha-nevua (resting of prophecy) and those that are a segulah (inherent property) or later development. Rambam focuses on the former.
Intertext
The source of the broader list of prophetic qualities, including עשיר, is R' Yochanan in Nedarim 38a. The Maharsha (ad loc.) explains that these qualities are derived from the verse (Deut. 18:15), implying a prophet should have at least some semblance of Moshe Rabbeinu's perfections.
Psak/Practice
While Rambam details the rigorous internal conditions, his omission of עשיר implies that external wealth is not a sine qua non for genuine spiritual leadership or prophecy. This heuristic suggests that true spiritual authority stems from internal perfection, not material possessions, which may accrue after authentic spiritual engagement.
Takeaway
Prophecy's core lies in refined internal qualities; wealth is an accessory, not a prerequisite, often manifesting as a blessing of prophecy, not a condition for it.
