Insight: Perspective Changes Everything

Sometimes, we feel like we’re missing the "moon"—the signs of growth or success in our kids—simply because we are standing in a "valley." Maimonides teaches that your physical vantage point determines what is visible; someone in a valley sees nothing, while someone on a mountain sees the sliver of a new month. As parents, when we feel like we aren't seeing "results" (a child finally listening, a difficult phase ending), it’s often just our perspective. We aren't failing; we are just standing in a low place. Sometimes, you have to climb a metaphorical mountain—change your environment or your expectations—to see the progress that’s already there.

"The moon will not be able to be sighted by a person in a low place... conversely, it will be possible for a person on a high and lofty mountain to sight [the moon]." — Mishneh Torah, Sanctification of the New Month 18:1
