How to Start

How to learn Torah without knowing Hebrew

You do not need to know Hebrew to start learning Torah or Talmud. You can learn entirely through clear English explanations today, and absorb the Hebrew and Aramaic gradually as you go — the way you'd pick up any language, by meeting it a little at a time in context. Not knowing Hebrew is the single most common reason people think they can't learn — and it's not actually a barrier to starting.

Can you really learn Torah in English?

Yes. Excellent English translations and explanations exist for the entire Jewish library — Torah, Mishnah, Talmud, and commentary. You can follow a daily lesson, understand the ideas, and engage with the debate without reading a word of the original. The original language adds depth over time, but it's a destination, not a prerequisite.

How do you pick up the Hebrew along the way?

  • Learn key terms in context — you'll meet the same words (like halacha, mitzvah, daf) again and again until they're yours.
  • See the original alongside the translation so the Hebrew/Aramaic stops looking like a wall.
  • Let it be gradual — comprehension first, language second. Most lifelong learners started in English.

What should a non-Hebrew reader learn first?

Start where the ideas carry the most and the language barrier matters least:

In short: Hebrew is a bonus, not a barrier. Learn the ideas in English now; the language comes with the miles.
