Foundational Figures

Who were the Patriarchs and Matriarchs?

The Patriarchs (Avot) and Matriarchs (Imahot) are the founding ancestors of the Jewish people, whose stories fill the Book of Genesis. The three Patriarchs are Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; the four Matriarchs are Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah. Through them, the Torah traces the covenant between God and the Jewish people, beginning with Abraham's journey of faith. Their lives — their struggles, journeys, and relationships — are the foundation of the Jewish family story.

Who were they?

  • Abraham & Sarah — the first to follow God's call, leaving their homeland; the model of faith and hospitality.
  • Isaac & Rebecca — the second generation, continuing the covenant.
  • Jacob, Rachel & Leah — Jacob (also called Israel) fathered the twelve tribes; Rachel and Leah are their mothers (along with Bilhah and Zilpah).

Their narratives are read each year in the weekly parsha cycle, in the opening portions of Genesis.

Why do they matter?

The Patriarchs and Matriarchs aren't just historical figures — they're moral and spiritual archetypes whose stories the tradition returns to constantly. Jewish prayer invokes "the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob" (and, in many communities, the Matriarchs), and their virtues — Abraham's kindness, Jacob's perseverance — are held up as inheritances every Jew carries. To learn their stories is to learn where the whole tradition begins.

In short: the Patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob) and Matriarchs (Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Leah) are the founding ancestors of the Jewish people, whose stories in Genesis begin the covenant.
