What is a Siyum?

A siyum (Hebrew for "completion") is a celebration marking the finish of a unit of Torah study — a tractate of Talmud, an order of Mishnah, or an entire cycle of learning. It's traditionally accompanied by a festive meal, words of Torah, and a special text recited upon completion. The siyum turns finishing learning into a communal milestone worth celebrating. It expresses a beautiful idea: completing learning is an accomplishment to be honored, and the moment you finish, you begin again.

What is a Siyum HaShas?

A Siyum HaShas is the grandest version: the celebration of completing the entire Talmud — all 2,711 pages — through the Daf Yomi cycle. It happens roughly every 7.5 years when a cycle ends, and it draws enormous crowds of learners worldwide who finished the Talmud together, page by page, over years. The next cycle then begins the very next day.

Why celebrate completing learning?

A siyum marks not just an ending but the discipline it took to get there — and it publicly honors Torah study as something joyful and worth committing to. It's also a powerful motivator: knowing a celebration waits at the finish line helps learners keep going through the long middle. (See how to build the daily habit.)

In short: a siyum celebrates completing a unit of Torah study; a Siyum HaShas marks finishing the entire Talmud through Daf Yomi — and then it all begins again.
