What is Counting the Omer?

Counting the Omer (Sefirat HaOmer) is the practice of verbally counting each of the 49 days from the second night of Passover until the holiday of Shavuot. Each evening, you count that day's number — "today is the fifth day of the Omer" — marking the journey from the Exodus (freedom) to receiving the Torah at Sinai (purpose). It turns a seven-week stretch of the calendar into a deliberate, daily spiritual countdown.

How does the Omer count work?

  • It runs 49 days, seven full weeks, from the second night of Passover to the eve of Shavuot.
  • Each night you say the count for that day (the day number and, after the first week, the weeks too).
  • Many people use the season for personal growth, with a traditional theme or character trait associated with each week.

Why count at all?

The count links Passover and Shavuot into one narrative: liberation isn't the end of the story — it's the beginning of a 49-step climb toward Sinai. Counting daily is itself a small lesson in consistency: showing up, one day at a time, toward a goal — much like a daily learning habit. (The 33rd day, Lag BaOmer, is a minor festive milestone within the count.)

In short: Counting the Omer is the daily 49-day count from Passover to Shavuot — a spiritual journey from freedom to receiving the Torah.
