What is Halacha?

Halacha (also spelled halakha) is Jewish law — the comprehensive body of practice that guides Jewish life, from prayer and Shabbat to business ethics and kindness. The word comes from the Hebrew root meaning "to walk," so halacha is literally "the way one walks": the path of how to live. It's derived from the Torah, developed through the Talmud, and codified in works like the Shulchan Aruch. Halacha is less a rulebook than a living system for translating Jewish values into everyday action.

Where does Halacha come from?

Halacha flows through a chain of sources:

  • The Torah — the foundational commandments (the tradition counts 613 mitzvot).
  • The Talmud — where the rabbis work out how those commandments apply (what is the Talmud?).
  • The codes — later works like Maimonides' Mishneh Torah and the Shulchan Aruch that organize the conclusions for practical use.
  • Ongoing rulings (responsa) that apply the tradition to new questions.

How do people learn and live Halacha?

Most learners study halacha both for understanding and for practice. Importantly, for actual decisions — what to do in a specific situation — the tradition directs people to a qualified rabbi rather than relying on a summary or an app. Learning builds the foundation; a posek (halachic authority) answers the live question.

In short: Halacha is Jewish law — "the way one walks" — derived from Torah and Talmud and codified over centuries to guide daily life.
