Hook

Ever get a clear instruction, but then think, "I could totally do this my way and it'd be even better"? We've all been there, and sometimes, it leads to a bit of a pickle!

Context

Here’s a quick look at who’s who and what’s happening:

  • Who: King Saul, Israel’s first king, and Samuel, a prophet (a person who shares God’s message).
  • When: Early days of ancient Israel, when kings were just starting out.
  • Where: The land of Israel.
  • What: God gave King Saul a very specific, serious mission.

Text Snapshot

God sent Samuel to Saul with a clear command: “Now go, attack Amalek, and proscribe all that belongs to him. Spare no one... but Saul and the troops spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen… They would not proscribe them.” When Samuel confronted Saul: “Does God delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices As much as in obedience to God’s command? Surely, obedience is better than sacrifice…” (I Samuel 15:2-3, 9, 22-23). You can read the full story here: https://www.sefaria.org/I_Samuel_15%3A2-34

Insight 1: Actions Speak Louder Than Excuses

Saul did go to battle, but he didn't follow the instructions fully. He thought saving the best animals for a sacrifice would be a good idea. But God wanted obedience, not a "better" plan.

Insight 2: God Cares About Your Heart

It’s not just about what you do, but how you do it, and if your heart is truly aligned with the command. Saul's partial obedience showed he put his own judgment or fear of his troops above God's clear word.

Insight 3: Obedience Over "Good Deeds"

Samuel’s famous line, "obedience is better than sacrifice," means that doing exactly what God asks is more important than offering a well-intentioned but uncommanded good deed.

Apply It

This week, pick one small instruction you receive (from a recipe, a friend, or a chore list) and try to follow it exactly, without adding your own "improvements." See what happens!

Chevruta Mini

  1. Have you ever tried to "improve" on instructions, only to find it didn't work out?
  2. Why do you think it's so hard for us to follow instructions exactly sometimes, even when we know they're important?

Takeaway

Genuine obedience means doing what’s asked, not what’s convenient or what we think is "better."
