Shalom, friend! Ever felt like you have a small part to play in a big, important project? Or maybe wondered how incredible things get built when everyone pitches in?

Hook

Ever started a big project and wondered how all the pieces, and people, would come together? Our ancient ancestors faced a similar challenge!

Context

Here’s a quick overview of what’s happening in this part of the Torah:

  • Who: Moses is leading the Israelite people, just after their amazing journey from slavery in Egypt.
  • When: About a year after they received the Torah (G-d's teachings) at Mount Sinai.
  • Where: Still wandering in the wilderness, camping out.
  • Key Term: Tabernacle – a portable holy dwelling for G-d’s presence.

Text Snapshot

Moses gathered everyone and shared G-d's instructions: "On six days work may be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a sabbath of complete rest, holy to G-d... Take from among you gifts to G-d; everyone whose heart is so moved shall bring them..." (Exodus 35:1-5). Then, people brought so much, Moses had to say, "Not a single man or woman should make further effort toward gifts for the sanctuary!" (Exodus 36:6-7). Insight 1: Everyone Counts

Notice how Moses invited everyone to bring gifts – not just the skilled artisans, but anyone "whose heart is so moved." From gold to simple goats' hair, every single contribution was valued. Your unique gift matters!

Insight 2: Rest Comes First

Even for building G-d's holy dwelling, the instruction about Shabbat (the Sabbath day of rest) comes first! This teaches us that taking a break and recharging is foundational, even for our most sacred work.

Insight 3: Overwhelming Generosity

Can you believe it? The people were so excited to give, they brought more than enough! Moses actually had to tell them to stop! Imagine that enthusiasm for a community project.

Apply It

This week, take just one minute to notice a small, unique skill or item you have. How could you share it, if your heart was moved, for a good cause? Or, simply take a 60-second, phone-free rest.
