Privacy Policy: Derekh Daily
Last updated: September 16, 2026
Derekh Daily is one of the Derekh Learning family of companion apps. It has no account and no sign-in. This page explains exactly what this specific app does, and does not do, with your information. For the company-wide policy covering our website, web app, and main iOS app, see the Derekh Learning Privacy Policy.
What Derekh Daily collects
The only data type this app touches is your location, and only for two narrow things:
- Manna asks for location on Shabbat to find your local sunset so the day's seal can lift at nightfall. Rounded coordinates go to Hebcal's public zmanim endpoint and nothing else.
- The Waiting Room, only if you turn it on, uses coarse location to skip offering Torah at places you have excluded (like home). Locations are rounded and compared only against the places you marked, on your phone.
Location is optional (both practices work without it), used only for app functionality, not linked to your identity, not used to track you, and not stored by us. On the App Store label this appears as Location → App Functionality (not linked, not for tracking).
Everything else is Data Not Collected. There is no analytics SDK and no advertising.
Motion (The Waiting Room) is read through Apple's on-device motion history, folded into a yes/no on your device, and discarded. No motion sample or summary is ever transmitted. Turn the single switch off and the app never reads your motion at all.
Where your data lives
Your progress in every practice (learned mishnayot and streak, gathered portions, kindness cards and your private Thirty-Six journal, your 613 collection, cycle check-offs, Genizah cards, Waiting Room settings and marked places) stays on your device, with an optional backup to your own iCloud (Apple's key-value storage). We have no access to that.
Thirty-Six makes no network connections at all. Its journal is private text you write for yourself, protected by an optional Face ID lock.
Services this app connects to
- Sefaria (sefaria.org): a public Torah-text library, for Hebrew/English texts and commentaries. Requests are generic (e.g. “today’s daf”); no personal data or identifiers are sent. (the Pirkei Avot text and Bartenura, 613's Sefer HaChinuch, Daf Tracker's calendars and texts).
- Hebcal (hebcal.com): a public Jewish-calendar API, for Hebrew dates, holidays, and times. Requests are generic; no personal data is sent. (Manna's sunset time, only if you enable location; 613's weekly parsha; Daf Tracker's date converter).
- Derekh Learning content service: a read-only request that returns already-published, shared Torah content (a lesson, verse, or card). The request sends nothing about you. (daily portions, lessons, the Yetzer and Waiting Room feed; each request sends an empty body, a random per-install feed seed, or a public citation, none of it stored, none of it about you).
Permissions
- Location (When In Use): "Derekh Daily uses your location for two things only: on Shabbat, to find local sunset so Manna's seal can lift at nightfall, and, if you turn it on in The Waiting Room, to skip offering Torah at places you've excluded. Locations are rounded and stay on this phone."
- Motion & Fitness: "So The Waiting Room in Derekh Daily can tell when you're standing still and offer you something to learn." Asked only when you turn detection on.
- Face ID: "Derekh Daily uses Face ID to protect your private Thirty-Six journal." Authentication happens on your device; we never receive your biometric data.
- Notifications: a runtime prompt only when you turn on a reminder for a practice. Reminders are scheduled on your device.
- Background App Refresh is used solely by The Waiting Room's stillness check, and only after you turn detection on.
Every practice works without granting any of these.
No accounts, no analytics, no ads
This app has no login and no user account. It contains no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs, and it does not track you across other apps or websites. There is no advertising identifier (IDFA) use.
Children's privacy
This app is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will take reasonable steps to address it.
Data retention
Because this app keeps your information on your device, we do not hold it. Data stored on your device is removed when you delete the app (subject to any device or iCloud backups, which are under your control).
Your choices
You can manage any permissions this app uses (such as location or microphone) at any time in iOS Settings, and the app keeps working without them wherever possible. Deleting the app removes its on-device data.
Changes to this policy
We may update this page from time to time. When we do, we will change the "last updated" date at the top.
