Founders are addicted to "mean position" metrics. You track ARR, churn, and LTV on a straight-line basis. You assume that if you execute the process correctly, the output will align perfectly with your projections. You build your financial models like clockwork, expecting the market to behave with the linear predictability of a spreadsheet.

But you are failing to account for the "true position." As Maimonides notes in Mishneh Torah, Sanctification of the New Month 13:1, the sun’s mean position is rarely where it is actually seen. The difference exists because the Earth is not at the center of the orbit. In business, your "center" is often your own ego or your internal processes, while the "true position" is where the market actually sits in relation to your product. Founders constantly mistake their internal projections for external reality. You’re navigating by a map that assumes a perfectly centered universe, while the market is elliptical, irregular, and shifting. If you don't calculate the "angle of the course"—the variance between your internal model and the market’s reality—you will always be off-target. You are not just missing a projection; you are missing the truth of your own business.
